Utah Capital Building with Olympic Rings high above in
the Wasatch Mountains.
The Alliance Pyrotechnic Team
just unveiled the most exciting
and spectacular performance
of pyrotechnics ever seen in
Olympic history. The two leaders
in the fireworks industry, the
Grucci Family and the Souza
Family, combined efforts with
Fireworks West of Utah to
produce the most dazzling and
awe-inspiring pyrotechnic special
effects for the 2002 Olympic
Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
The series of fireworks displays and
the "Light the Fire Within" theme
began with the arrival of the Olympic
Torch in Salt Lake City on February 7th.
A close proximity display from the
rooftop of Salt Lake's City-County
building warmly welcomed the Olympic
Flame to Salt Lake City. On the same
evening a barrage of Comets and
Crossettes helped illuminate the
450 ft. x 300 ft. Olympic Rings high
above Salt Lake in the Wasatch Mountains.
The fireworks extravaganza continued
for the Opening Ceremonies to start
the Winter Games at Olympic Stadium.
A countdown of brilliant Silver Comets
from the stadium rim, stadium trailers
located behind the Olympic Cauldron
and a high aerial site beyond the
stadium powerfully ignited the start
of the 2002 Winter Games. Nightly
fireworks shows were produced from
two separate locations through the
duration of the Games. Close proximity
and stage effects lit up Olympics
Medals Plaza in downtown Salt Lake
at the daily medal awards and a high
aerial display closed out each day's
events in Park City, Utah.
Closing Ceremonies at Olympic Stadium.
On Day 17 the final day of the
Games an unparalleled fireworks
spectacular enveloped the entire
City. Stage effects, close proximity
and rooftop effects were used
throughout the Closing Ceremonies
to amaze the international audience.
Immediately following the close of
the Games a "City-wide" pyrotechnic
extravaganza erupted, which engulfed
the entire Salt Lake vicinity.
This was the largest fireworks
show in Utah's history and included
the rare use of 24" aerial shells,
the largest allowed by law in the
United States. When all was over,
Salt Lake City and the USA were
undoubtedly hosts to the most
magnificent Olympic Fireworks
of all times.
