The 2002 Winter Olympic Games were held in and around Salt Lake City, Utah from February 8 to 24, 2002. The Paralympics from March 7 to 16, 2002.
During the opening ceremony, a pyrotechnic display began north of the stadium. Workers at 11 launch sites in the valley around the stadium ignited 10,000 shells that spectacularly lit the mountains for nearly five minutes as the Olympic anthem blared through the stadium.
